Biography

Dorian Sobalvarro is a charcoal artist based in Bowie, Maryland. Born in Honduras in 2007 and raised by a widowed mother who carried their family across a foreign country. They had to flea Honduras because of his father’s assassination due to gang violence. He discovered creating art offered a sense of freedom, later becoming a form of healing. His hope is that his work “…meets you where you are.”

Dorian was awarded by the Maryland Board of Higher Education for his artistic excellence, the first award of its kind bestowed in 5 years. His inaugural solo exhibition Creating Purpose was curated and fully sponsored by Ian Callender at Akridge and Arena Social in Washington DC, where Sobalvarro became the youngest artist in residency since the organization's inception. His work will now be shown internationally in Egypt at the University of Alexandria, expected Fall 2026.

He works with large scale figurative charcoal pieces exploring cultural critics and cultural identity.
